Portugal is small on the map, but climate differences between regions directly affect the success of exterior painting. Weather conditions are generally more stable and predictable in autumn compared to summer or winter, affecting drying time, paint adhesion and finish durability1. A facade painted at the wrong time may start to show problems after just a few months, and the responsibility rarely lies with the paint quality or the professional's work. The problem is almost always the choice of timing.
South and coast: the challenge of salt, sun and extreme heat
In the Algarve and southern coastal areas, the main enemy is not cold but salt and direct sunlight for hours on end, with facades facing south and west receiving intense UV radiation throughout most of the year2. Sea wind deposits salt particles on surfaces, which retain moisture and accelerate pigment degradation. For these areas, the ideal period is late spring or early autumn. This avoids the extreme heat of July and August, which makes paint dry too quickly and can cause cracks, and takes advantage of thermal stability and more controlled humidity. Cities like Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Tavira or Olhão benefit especially from this window. The same applies to the Vicentine Coast and the coastal strip down to Setúbal.
North and interior: persistent humidity and temperature swings
In the North and interior, especially in Braga, Porto or Viseu, the problem reverses: humidity is more persistent, weather changes with little warning and temperature swings between day and night can be large, so the best period falls between May and September. In this part of the country, humid winters extend until April, and October rains return early. Painting outside the May to September window means risking walls that take days to dry, favouring the appearance of stains, blisters or early peeling. Temperature swings also complicate matters: a morning of 12°C followed by an afternoon of 28°C can compromise uniform paint curing. Towns like Guimarães, Vila Real, Lamego, Coimbra or Aveiro follow the same logic. The further inland and north, the smaller the margin for error.
Centre and Tejo valley: the balance between stability and unpredictability
The central region, including Lisbon, Leiria, Santarém and part of the Tejo valley, offers greater flexibility. The useful window extends from April to October, though the transition months, May, June and September, are the most reliable. The climate here is less extreme than in the South but less predictable than in the interior north during summer. Lisbon and surroundings (Cascais, Sintra, Almada, Loures) benefit from an additional advantage: proximity to the ocean moderates temperature, but also brings greater exposure to wind and maritime humidity, requiring attention to the weather forecast for the days following application. Évora, Portalegre and other towns in Upper Alentejo have very hot and dry summers, ideal for exterior painting, but from mid September onwards the window begins to close.
Three practical questions before scheduling painting
Before scheduling exterior painting, it is worth answering three questions. First: has the facade been cleaned or inspected in the last 12 months, because accumulated dirt, moss or mould prevent the new paint from adhering. Second: are there visible signs of moisture, such as dark stains, efflorescence or previous paint peeling off? If so, the problem must be solved before painting, otherwise moisture will reappear under the new layer. Third: does the forecast for the next seven days allow work to proceed safely? It is not recommended to apply paint when ambient temperature is below 5°C and when relative humidity is above 80%3. Ideally, there should be at least three consecutive days without rain after the final application, to ensure proper curing.
When not to paint, regardless of region
There are situations where no region in Portugal offers safe conditions. Painting during or immediately after rainy days is a common mistake: even if the surface appears dry to the touch, walls can retain moisture inside, compromising adhesion. Painting when relative humidity is very high (above 85%), night time temperature drops below 5°C or the facade is wet or cold to the touch does not work. Likewise, it is not advised to apply paint over surfaces that are very hot from sun exposure, as paint dries too quickly and there is a risk of cracks forming. On days of strong wind, especially in coastal areas, application is also compromised: paint dries unevenly and dust or salt can accumulate before curing.

The best time to paint your facade is not chosen from a national rule. It is chosen based on local climate, your home's orientation, short term weather forecasts and the actual condition of surfaces.
